Christianity is a reasonable faith. It is a faith based on real historical events recorded by eyewitnesses. Faith is not an empty-headed easy believism but is based on facts and based on a rational understanding of those facts.
It is rational, given the almost infinite complexity of even the smallest living things, to believe that a super-intelligent Being called God created all living things. It is also entirely reasonable to expect that the Supreme Being who created human beings would desire to speak to human beings. A logical next step would be to believe that the words the Supreme Being had spoken to man would be written down in a book for posterity.
Though most human writers may have a hard time getting a book published I don’t think God had any trouble inspiring His book — the Bible — and getting it published! God even put His signature on the Bible. The multitudes of predictive prophecies and their fulfillments testify to the supernatural origin and inspiration of the Bible and these prophesies are like God’s signature on it.
No other holy book such as the Koran, the Hindu Vedas, the Upanishads or the Tao-te-King has anything like the Bible’s record of prophesy and fulfillment. Most holy books of other faiths have no prophecies at all. The Bible is truly in a class by itself and therefore it is entirely reasonable to trust it. The Bible’s teachings have the ring of truth.
In earlier generations skeptics attacked the historical accuracy of the Bible. The science of archaeology however has confirmed the integrity of the Bible’s references to places and things. Prominent archaeologist Nelson Glueck though not a Christian himself, wrote that “no archaeological discovery has ever controverted a biblical reference.”
Many intelligent observers maintain that it is the secular viewpoint that is in many ways irrational, illogical and unreasonable. The secular view of human origins is that human beings evolved not just from apes but from dirt! The secularists believe that inorganic molecules — dirt — randomly collided and became organic compounds and these collided and became proteins and randomly formed RNA, DNA, etc., etc., until a living cell was formed. A century ago such a view might be considered absurd but excusable. Now however with the increasing knowledge of the incredible complexity of even the simplest living cell such a view is manifestly absurd! Francis Crick, co-discoverer of DNA, calculated the probability of proteins forming randomly and found the probability to be so small as to effectively never occur.
Science, as it progresses is clearly on the side of the creationist. As new findings in the field of microbiology (and other fields) pour in, the evidence mounts for the necessity of an intelligent designer — God — to create life.
The secularist must make an incredible leap of faith. It is both shocking and disheartening to see secularists cling to their irrational position against all odds.
God is a reasonable and loving Being who has given us abundant evidence of both His existence and His love for us. The word “faith” means to trust in another person. Faith is a relationship word. We must trust in God and relate to Him as a person. God invites us to repent and turn to Him in faith to receive salvation through Christ who died for our sins.
