KATHRYN KUHLMAN: HEALING EVANGELIST

The Gospels record that women were the first to see the empty tomb and the resurrected Christ. From the days of the early church, women have been involved in evangelism and other aspects of ministry. (Evangelism is the ministry of proclaiming the good news of forgiveness of sins through Christ who died for our sins.)

The New Testament records the prominent ministry of Priscilla who was the wife of a Jewish believer in Jesus named Aquila. In the many Bible passages that refer to this couple Priscilla’s name is most often mentioned first. In virtually all other references to married couples in the Bible the husband’s name is mentioned first as is the case in social custom even in our own politically correct times. Most Bible scholars believe that her name is mentioned first because she had a more prominent ministry than her husband. Other details of her and her husband’s ministry is given in Bible passages including Romans 16:3-5 which mentions that a church met in their home.

In our own day there are many outstanding female evangelists that I could profile but I wish to draw your attention to a healing evangelist of recent fond memory named Kathryn Kuhlman (1907-1976). Miss Kuhlman entered ministry at age sixteen assisting her sister and brother-in-law. She soon began itinerant evangelistic ministry on her own in the states of Idaho, Utah and Colorado in the western part of the United States. She was headquartered in Denver Colorado by 1933. She also preached the good news of salvation over the radio and expanded her itinerant ministry into other parts of the United States.

Something occurred during one of her meetings in Franklin, Pennsylvania in 1946 that changed the course of her ministry forever. A woman was suddenly healed of a tumor during the meeting. At meetings soon after this Miss Kuhlman would receive a word of knowledge* that someone was being healed of a specific disease in a certain part of the auditorium. A person in that part of the auditorium would in fact be healed of that specific disease at that time!!! (*Word of knowledge is a gift of the Holy Spirit in which a person receives a verbal revelation from God, see 1 Corinthians 12:7-10.)

The year 1948 saw a great outpouring of revival and miraculous power in what was called “The Latter Rain Movement” or “Latter Rain Revival.” Beginning that year and during the next few years medically documented miraculous healings became commonplace in the meetings of healing evangelists such as William Branham, Jack Coe, Alonso A. Allen and others too numerous to mention. Kathryn Kuhlman was prominent among them. She moved her headquarters to Pittsburgh Pennsylvania in the eastern part of the USA in 1948 and held regular services in that city. She also gained nationwide recognition through a favorable seven page article in Redbook magazine.

In the 1960s she frequently traveled to California and regularly filled the 7,500 seat Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. Phenomenal, outstanding miracles continued. She became a tele-evangelist, producing more than 500 telecasts for CBS television.

I met a man named Ralph Anderson who was instantly healed of severe cerebral palsy at a Kathryn Kuhlman meeting in the early 70’s (see article #120 in archive on this website). A man I once worked for, Billy Wade, had a son dramatically, instantly healed by God at one of her meetings at the Shrine Auditorium.

Miss Kuhlman rejected the term “faith healer” and always referred to herself as an evangelist. She gave God the glory and acknowledged that the healings took place by the power of God’s Holy Spirit. She also taught that the miracle that is greater than any physical healing is the new birth in which the human spirit is regenerated when a person repents and turns to God through Christ to receive forgiveness of sins. In other words to receive forgiveness of sins through Christ is a greater miracle than any physical healing!

Steps to salvation:

Jesus said “Ye must be born again” (John 3:7).

  • 1) Believe that God created you and loves you and sent the Messiah (Messiah is Hebrew for Christ) to redeem you.
  • 2) Believe that Jesus Christ came in fulfillment of over 300 Bible prophecies to die for you, to take upon Himself the penalty of your sins (Isaiah 53:5-6, John 6:29, Romans 4:5, First Peter 3:18).
  • 3) Turn from sin and call on the name of Jesus to receive forgiveness of sins (Romans 10:13).
  • 4) Receive Jesus as Savior and experience the new birth (John 1:12, Acts 2:38).
  • 5) Follow Jesus Christ as Lord (John 14:21).

Prayer to receive salvation:

“Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Romans 10:13).

To receive the salvation that Jesus purchased for us at the terrible cost of His suffering and death on our behalf I invite you to pray this simple prayer:

“Dear heavenly Father, I thank you for sending Jesus, the promised Messiah, to die for my sins. I admit that I am a sinner. I repent of my sins and I ask for your forgiveness on the basis of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. I ask you to fill me with your Holy Spirit to empower me to serve you under the Lordship of Jesus Christ, Amen.”

If you prayed this prayer in the humble sincerity of your heart then you have received everlasting life, which includes power to live right in this life and entrance into heaven in the afterlife!

    1. I met Ralph Anderson only once. I was very impressed with him and saw the old brace he carried with him. I also heard Ralph’s testimony on Sid Roth’s radio show ‘Messianic Vision’ over at Sidroth.org. You have to look for Ralph’s testimony in the archive of old radio shows at sidroth.org. It was aired quite a few years ago. The phrase “DTF 120” refers to article #120 in my “Defending the Faith” article series.
      Blessings,
      Bill

  2. I also met Ralph Anderson at Time Square Church in ’94 or ’95. He also related how he died and was brought back to life in the morgue of a hospital. Katherine Kuhlman did not even know he was healed in the service.

  3. Do you know where Ralph Anderson is? He was a friend of mine in 1986 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I met him at Oral Roberts City Faith Hospital. I was working there as a dishwasher. Dave
