A recent motion picture release entitled Far From Heaven gives us a glimpse of the secularist disdain for sexual restraint. The film is set in American suburbia in 1957-58. It is an apparent attack on the “hypocrisy” of the quasi-Christian American culture of the 1950s. The film is about a young married couple in which the husband “discovers” that he is gay and the wife feels drawn into an affair with her black gardener. The film disdains the social conventions and inhibitions of the time that restrain the behavior of the film’s characters.
It’s no secret that the American media elite look down on the social order of the 1950s. The 50s was the last decade in which the remnants of Christian social order prevailed in America. I freely acknowledge that the 50s culture was far from perfect. I’ll even go so far as to say that the film’s title Far From Heaven is an accurate description.
If the 50s in America were far from heaven what has happened in the decades since is close to hell. In the 60s we experienced the sexual revolution. The inhibitions were removed and a great social experiment was launched. Free sex and drugs were to bring on utopia.
Utopia is the perfect society on earth. This unattainable perfect earthly society is the secular substitute for heaven. The secularists live only for this life. They must have heaven in this life because they don’t believe in the afterlife.
A document entitled The Humanist Manifesto states the secular claim that death results in the cessation of consciousness. The postmodern view of heaven is an earthly utopia of no sexual restraint and freely available abortions to kill off the unwanted products of adultery.
The sexual revolution hasn’t brought utopia but instead resulted in broken families and epidemics of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). The skyrocketing divorce rate has not liberated women. It can be argued that American women do a larger share of child rearing chores than they did in the 50s. This is because in the 50s the husband was at least present to do part of the child rearing. The sexual revolution encouraged multitudes of fathers to abandon their families through divorce or not to marry the mother of their children in the first place. Legions of American women are raising their children alone in poverty.
Their are at least 39 major forms of STDs. Gone are the days when there were just syphilis and gonorrhea. Incidentally there seems to be a news blackout on STDs. When’s the last time you saw a 60 Minutes segment on STDs? The secular elite are embarrassed over the failure of their sexual revolution to produce anything even remotely resembling happiness.
One in five Americans over twelve has one or more STDs. Most STDs are incurable because they are viral. Antibiotics will kill bacteria but they won’t kill viruses. Human Papiloma virus (HPV) causes genital warts but some varieties can also cause cervical cancer in women. That’s sexually transmitted cancer! HPV kills more American women than AIDS. A major study has shown that condoms are useless in preventing the transmission of HPV.
God’s commands in the Bible that forbid fornication, adultery and homosexual relations are there for our protection. God is all-wise and He loves us. God offers us forgiveness through Christ who died for our sins. Salvation through Christ brings us far from hell and gives us entrance to heaven.
