Modern Science Discovers the Spirit World

Article #289

I’ve often mentioned that God has two books. One is the Bible and the other is nature. God inspired the Bible and God created nature. The Bible and nature do not contradict each other. I’ve shown in many apologetic articles that as science progresses it moves in the direction of confirming the truth of the Bible.

In this article I’ll show that modern science has discovered the spirit world. Another way we could describe the spirit world is to call it the spiritual dimensions. To set the stage let me briefly explain Einstein’s theory of general relativity and the theory of quantum mechanics and show how the collision of these two theories necessitated a new theory called string theory. To do so I will quote extensively from my apologetic article #196 titled “Relativity, String Theory and Quantum Mechanics”:

“Einstein’s theory of general relativity and the theory of quantum mechanics are two widely accepted and experimentally verified theories of physics. There’s only one problem. They contradict each other! General relativity deals with physics on the macro scale of massive gravitational fields warping the space-time continuum. Quantum mechanics is useful in the description of particle physics and the interactions of matter and energy on extremely small scales. General relativity describes a smooth continuum of space-time but quantum physics describes distortions of space-time in “quantum foam” at the micro level. Thus these two well tested theories mutually exclude one another.

“General relativity is used in describing gravitational fields on large scales and so in research it seldom collides with quantum mechanics. An exception to this is black holes where gravity is so strong as to collapse a powerful gravitational field to the micro level. In the study of black holes the equations of general relativity are joined to those of quantum mechanics and give nonsensical answers.

“To resolve this conflict the new and as yet experimentally untested theory called string theory has been advanced. A thumbnail sketch of this theory is that it maintains that subatomic particles such as electrons are not mere points but are oscillating strings. This assumption, by a bizarre set of steps, eliminates quantum foam. String theory also contains the unproven idea that the universe consists of nine or ten spatial dimensions in addition to the dimension of time. These extra dimensions are called the hidden dimensions.”

String theory’s beginnings can be traced back to the work of Italian theoretical physicist Gabriele Veneziano (1942 –    ) who in 1968 proposed the dual resonance model. Veneziano was about twenty-six years old when he proposed his seminal scientific model. That was the same age as was Albert Einstein when he put forward his theory of relativity in 1905.

In 1970, scientists building on Veneziano’s work, birthed string theory. In 1971 superstring theory was born. An ultra-important development in string theory occurred in 1974 when it was shown that string theory requires extra dimensions.

I remember reading about string theory years ago when string theorists maintained that there are eleven dimensions of reality. In more recent years theoretical physicists have come to assert that string theory implies the existence of twenty-six dimensions. Think of it; scientists have good scientific reasons to believe that no longer are we limited in our understanding to just four dimensions on the space time continuum. No longer just height, depth, width and time but many more dimensions of reality that we are just beginning to understand!

Notice that I mentioned that string theory implies that there are twenty-six dimensions. No scientist has traveled into these other dimensions and returned.

Scientists involved in this research have come around to claim that these extra dimensions constitute one or maybe a number of parallel universes. A parallel universe is a universe of dimensions not generally observable that exists in the same universe that we can see and live in now. In other words a parallel universe is right here, right now alongside of us, not just up in the sky or in outer space somewhere. A parallel universe could be the realm of spirit or what could be called the spirit world. It can also be called the supernatural.

Therefore we can say with some confidence that modern scientists, specifically theoretical physicists, have discovered the spirit world! They studied nature and found the supernatural. Some may say that it seems like a bit of a stretch to say that they’ve discovered the realm of spirit about which the Bible teaches. I would counter that since the scientists have discovered other dimensions, it seems reasonable to infer that all or a number of these extra dimensions could indeed form the realm of spirit.

The upshot is that modern physicists have stumbled on strong proof of the existence of the spirit world and have, in a powerful way, confirmed the truth of the Bible!

The Bible teaches that there are intelligent beings that live in the realm of spirit. The Bible frequently mentions beings which are called angels and demons. The Bible says “God is a Spirit” (John 5:24). Angels and demons are not generally visible to the naked eye unless by miraculous intervention, God opens our eyes to see into the realm of spirit.

The intelligent beings that live in the spirit world are capable of doing things that affect our universe. Anything that happens in our observable universe that is caused by the activity of something in the spirit world is a miracle. A miracle, by definition, has a supernatural cause.

Many miracles occur today in Christian gatherings. Christian believers are graced by God to work miracles by the power of Jesus Christ. Christian ministers including Leif Hetland, Bill Johnson, Randy Clark, John Kilpatrick and Joan Hunter have seen stunning, powerful healing miracles occur in their meetings. Prominent evangelist R.R. Soares of Brazil has testimonies of many healings in his meetings. Healing evangelists of recent fond memory include Kathryn Kuhlman, John G. Lake, Kenneth Hagin, Derek Prince and John Wimber who witnessed many miracles in their Christian meetings decades ago.

When Jesus of Nazareth taught the people of ancient Judea He worked many miracles to show His authority. He didn’t just say “I’m Jesus, obey Me.” He proved that He was and is the promised Messiah of Israel. (The word: Christ means the same as the Hebrew word: Messiah). Jesus opened the eyes of a man who was born blind. Jesus cleansed lepers and even raised people from the dead!

Jesus came in fulfillment of over 300 prophecies that were written in the Old Testament hundreds of years before His birth. The prophets foretold both His greatest grace and His greatest miracle. His greatest grace was that He would suffer and die taking upon Himself the penalty we deserved because of our sins. His greatest miracle is that He was raised from the dead to offer forgiveness of sins to all who repent and call upon Him. Turn to Christ today to receive forgiveness of sins!

(My source for much of the above is the article String theory and the origin of the universe — new idea, old problem from Technical Journal, The in-depth Journal of Creation (vol. 18(2) 2004 and Cheat Sheet: String Theory for Dummies from book titled String Theory for Dummies by Andrew Zimmerman Jones [with Daniel Robbins] at Dummies.com.)

Steps to salvation:

Jesus said “Ye must be born again” (John 3:7).

  • 1) Believe that God created you and loves you and sent the Messiah (Messiah is Hebrew for Christ) to redeem you.
  • 2) Believe that Jesus Christ came in fulfillment of over 300 Bible prophecies to die for you, to take upon Himself the penalty of your sins (Isaiah 53:5-6, John 6:29, Romans 4:5, First Peter 3:18).
  • 3) Turn from sin and call on the name of Jesus to receive forgiveness of sins (Romans 10:13).
  • 4) Receive Jesus as Savior and experience the new birth (John 1:12, Acts 2:38).
  • 5) Follow Jesus Christ as Lord (John 14:21).

Prayer to receive salvation:

“Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Romans 10:13).

To receive the salvation that Jesus purchased for us at the terrible cost of His suffering and death on our behalf I invite you to pray this simple prayer:

“Dear heavenly Father, I thank you for sending Jesus, the promised Messiah, to die for my sins. I admit that I am a sinner. I repent of my sins and I ask for your forgiveness on the basis of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. I ask you to fill me with your Holy Spirit to empower me to serve you under the Lordship of Jesus Christ, Amen.”

If you prayed this prayer in the humble sincerity of your heart then you have received everlasting life, which includes power to live right in this life and entrance into heaven in the afterlife!
